GIS Analyst

Overall job purpose:
Maintain components of Arch Coal's GIS to ensure quality and integrity of data in support of all mapping activities

Major Responsibility/Activity:
Generate maps and reports using GIS software and related equipment to answer users' questions related to mining locations/activities. Meet with users to define data needs, project requirements and required data outputs. 20%
Analyze spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate into documents and reports. 10%
Compile geographic data from a variety of sources including censuses, field observation, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps. 10%
Analyze geographic relationships among varying types of data in order to answer questions or generate new mapping products. 20%
Maintain the document library. Place new data in system and retrieve archived documents as requested. 10%
Update and maintain data in the Internet Map Service (IMS). Collect updated data from the appropriate source following a set timeline for updates, make the corresponding changes to the GIS maps, then push the changes to IMS. 10%
Develop internet mapping services using ArcGIS Server software to be analyzed and tested for the eventual replacement of ArcIMS. 20%

Required Qualifications: (Include education, experience, physical requirements, special skills and licenses or certifications required.)
• Bachelor's degree emphasizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or equivalent experience.
• 2 years' experience with GIS software.
• Experience producing maps using a GIS.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to convey GIS/spatial information to non-GIS/technical people.
• Superior analytical and organizational skills, including the ability to solve problems using the GIS suite of tools.

Preferred Qualifications: (Preferred, but not required, to successfully perform the requirements of the job)
• Three+ years' experience in a GIS environment.
• Experience with AutoCAD.
• Knowledge of ArcObjects/VBA within ArcMap.
• Experience with ArcGIS 9.x or higher software.
• Experience producing quality maps using ArcMap software.
• Experience with ASP's, .Net, and GIS related website development.
• Experience with ArcGIS Server software.
• Experience with Adobe Flex development.

• Plotter, scanner.
