Geologist
OVERALL JOB PURPOSE:
Provide geologic support for West Elk operation and the corporate office. Geologist will be trained in exploration and mine support duties, as well as computer modeling skills, in order to develop an experienced individual that is ultimately capable of self-sufficiently performing all aspects of mine support expected of a mine-site geologist.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Underground mapping of geologic features encountered during mining development. |
|
Underground channel sampling. |
|
Creating cross-sections, maps, and geologic reports as requested and required by supervisor and mine personnel. |
|
Creating geologic computer models with associated maps and reports. |
|
Overseeing surface exploration activities. These duties will include: Supervising general project logistics Supervising construction of access roads, drill sites, and all project reclamation Supervising work of contract geologists Logging cuttings and core samples Monitoring environmental compliance Preparing core samples for coal analysis |

Permitting of exploration projects. These duties will include: Field checking drill sites, access routes, and related project locations Drafting of maps showing access roads, drill sites, and other features of the planned project Communicating with various government agencies |
|
Entering information obtained through exploration and sampling activities into CoalAccess databases. |
|
Overseeing underground exploration projects. |
MINIMUM REQUIRED SKILLS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Four-year degree in Geology or related discipline or equivalent coal geology/ similar experience
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Superior analytical skills
- Proficiency in basic computer skills, including word processing, e-mail, and spreadsheets
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor including walking/hiking in rough terrain, bending, crawling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and using a pick
- Ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicles with manual transmission
- Ability to work without supervision
PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- 15+ years of coal geology experience including extensive underground experience
- Experience with surveying/mapping
- Thorough practical knowledge of coal geology modeling software (preferably Minex)
- Experience with exploration activities
- Experience with AutoCAD or similar computer-aided drafting
EQUIPMENT USED:
Beyond general business equipment such as PC, fax, copier, printer, etc.
Operation of four-wheel drive pickup trucks and underground man-trip vehicles is required, any of which may be equipped with manual transmission.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
Position requires frequent work without direct on-site supervision.
